Maritime Injuries
Maritime law applies to people and businesses that work on the water. Maritime law encompasses legal dealings among the crew, ship owners, passengers and shippers of cargo. Among those covered by maritime law are seaman and river crews aboard ships on navigable waters, workers on oil rigs and crews on cruise ships.
The Maritime Law attorneys at Parker Waichman Alonso LLP have more than 20 years of experience helping maritime workers with job-related injuries. We represent maritime workers and their families in maritime accidents involving ships, offshore drilling rigs, supply boats, barges, diving and helicopter crashes and accidents.

Maritime law encompasses several types of legal claims that offer protection to injured seaman and maritime workers. They include:
-
Jones Act—The Jones Act allows injured sailors,
merchant marines and the crew of a ship or vessel, including towed oil
rigs, to bring legal action against ship owners, ship captains or other
crew members. The act allows workers to collect damages based on claims of
negligence and unseaworthiness.
-
Death on the High Seas Act—This federal law allows the
spouse and dependent family members of a deceased seaman to collect
damages if their loved one's death was
caused by negligence or the unseaworthiness of a vessel while more than
three nautical miles from shore.
- The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (LHWCA) provides for compensation and medical care to workers disabled by on-the-job injuries. Those injuries may occur on navigable waters of the United States and adjoining areas such as shipyards, loading docks or harbors. The law covers workers in traditional maritime occupations such as longshore workers, ship-repairers, shipbuilders, shipbreakers and harbor construction workers.
A job on the water comes with its share of risk under the best of conditions. Therefore, we at Parker Waichman Alonso LLP strongly believe that ship owners and marine-related companies should provide the safest possible working conditions to minimize accidents. Workers shouldn’t be put in situations that increase the risk of injury. Unfortunately, many preventable accidents and injuries do occur.
If you or a family member has been seriously injured in a maritime-related accident on the ocean, on a river or an offshore oil rig, those responsible should be held accountable. The maritime law attorneys at Parker Waichman Alonso LLP can put their admiralty law and maritme law expertise to work to get you a fair settlement or verdict for your injuries.
Maritime law is an intricate area of law, and you need a seasoned maritime law attorney to navigate its complexities.
